Murder of the Maelstrom Queen
4th Edition
Level 1

From time immemorial, the rulers of the mortal world have been counseled and tempted by capricious primordial spirits who rule over the elements. The greatest and most sinister of these was a half-kraken medusa known as the Maelstrom Queen, who sought to supplant the mortal races with her own line of immortal tentacled monstrosities. On the verge of her ultimate triumph, when the leviathans at her command rose from the depths, a legendary assassin murdered the Maelstrom Queen in her half-submerged palace with her own weapon. But the primordial mistress refused to let something as trifling as death put an end to her designs. Every 13 years, she regenerates enough mystic power to rise again, and the world’s greatest heroes are sent to murder the Maelstrom Queen once more.

This adventure is meant for characters of levels 4 to 6. The default setting is the Barony of Loup-Montagne, but any remote, heavily wooded principality with highly superstitious residents will do. The Barony of Loup-Montagne is a remote region of densely forested hills cut by steep-banked streams, rocky outcrops, and darkly shadowed dales. Any similar area in your campaign world can fill in, with or without the French-sounding names used here. The center of Loup-Montagne is the town of Roulune. It is home to about five hundred residents in roughly eighty households. Roulune is hardly a metropolis, but it is the biggest town for miles around, thanks largely to the remoteness of the region. Only a few roads of any consequence pass through the town: the main route is a trade road through the tangled, wooded hills that dominate this region. Baron Chaput exacts a toll on traders who use the road, in exchange for keeping it safe from bandits and monsters. The toll is not excessive and most traders pay it willingly, because the road is considered safe, by and large. Incidents of robbery and violence along the highway are rare within the barony.

A D&D adventure for 15th-level characters. Casters with access to control water, control weather, or control winds will prove especially valuable, as will characters with strong Swim skills. The adventure is best suited to a predominantly good or neutral aligned party of PC's. Strike on the Rabid Dawn takes place in the port city of Hardby (Dungeon #109). As most of the action takes place within a lighthouse and on a ship at sea, however, any suitable port from your campaign makes an appropriate substitution for Hardby.
